Invasive Japanese knotweed takes root in TNRD
KAMLOOPS — The Thompson Nicola Regional District has put a priority on fighting an invasive plant that is taking root within the district.
An advisory released yesterday ( July 30) says the public should be on alert for Japanese knotweed which was introduced to North America from Japan in the 1800’s as an ornamental plant. It has now become one of the 100 worst invasive species in the world, and there are patches of it in the TNRD.
The Regonal District is asked people to keep an eye out for the plant and if you see patches of it, report it to the TNRD officals say the plant has a wide, invasive root system that can get into home foundations, retaining walls and other critical structures. Experts advise against digging it up, as that can make it worse. The suggestion is to call a specialist who can advise on a cleanup plan.
