KAMLOOPS — It was a great weekend for athletes from the Kamloops Track and Field Club at the Canadian championships that wrapped up Sunday in Montreal.

Bazil Spencer from Quesnel, who trains with Dylan Armstrong in Kamloops, won a gold medal at the junior championships. Spencer won with a personal-best outdoor jump of 2.03, nailing it on his first attempt. What’s most impressive is Spencer has been dealing with jumpers knee leading up to the meet.

“It was an amazing performance. With him battling and struggling with a few injuries this year, it was a very impressive competition,” said Armstrong.

Sixteen year old Matt Arnold from the Kamloops club finish fifth in the junior hammer throw event. Armstrong bumped the Revelstoke native up from the youth level to compete. He threw 50.42 metres on his final attempt.

“It was a good learning experience for him. He was competing up a category, so as 16 year old guy to go and do that, very impressive,” noted Armstrong.

In the para events, Canadian record holder Greg Stewart took gold in F-46 shot put event on Friday with a throw of 15.14 metres. Stewart now sets his sights on the Pan Am Games. Fellow Kamloops track and field club member Josh Farrell from Ontario took silver in the F-20 shot put event with a throw of 14.22 metres.

Next for the club is the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Nova Scotia starting on Aug. 9.
