Kamloops RCMP warn drivers of license plate and sticker theft potential

KAMLOOPS — You take everything out of your vehicle, and make sure it’s locked every time… but Kamloops RCMP want to remind residents there is more for thieves to take from parked cars.

Taking license plates, or registration stickers is not a new crime, and Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says it’s ongoing throughout Kamloops.

“It happens throughout the community, so there’s not one certain neighbourhood that it affects more than others.”

Shelkie says it’s important to try and park vehicles in well lit areas, or in areas where people walk or drive by often.

“If you have a lot of hedges around your driveway or anything like that, cut down any barriers,” She explains, “So at least the bad guys out there who are taking these license plates and stickers know that somebody may be looking out the window and see what’s happening.”

In the event a license plate or sticker is swiped, Shelkie says the first thing to do is to call RCMP to report it.

“Give us a call and we’ll give you a file number. And with that file number, you then call the vehicle registration where you got your license plates from, and they will issue either a new plate, or a new vehicle registration sticker,” Shelkie explains, “With the information that you give us about what your plate number is, we can look up and cancel the plate number, or we can look up your vehicle registration sticker, and cancel that.”

Once RCMP have the incident information, if whoever has stolen a plate or sticker puts it on another vehicle, when police pull over the car, they’ll know that it has stolen property on it, and can charge the thief.
