KAMLOOPS — This morning, the City celebrated the completion of the Lansdowne Parkade mural — Community Confluence.

With over 80,000 tiles used, it took artist Bill Frymire and his team about two months to get the mosaic spread around the downtown parkade.

Today, a didactic was unveiled, which features some information on the piece, and what it represented. Frymire says it was great to work in his hometown, and have support from the local art community and city.

“Depending on the time of day and how much wind there is, if it’s really still, it’s fairly still today so we’ve just got a bit of movement on the kinetic tiles — the ones that move and have the reflective properties,” Frymire says. “So if you haven’t seen that, and there’s a little bit of wind, that’s something to look for.”

While the piece is eye catching, Kamloops councillor and acting mayor, Kathy Sinclair, says the mural will bring more than just aesthetic benefits.

“When we look at the arts as an industry, it’s a $61.7 billion industry in Canada. So arts increases the livability of a community, and increase community safety, public art especially,” she says. “And it also is a big economic driver. And that means that local businesses are going to see some benefits from this as well.”

Sinclair adds, the piece will also be a notable landmark for any tourists making their way through Kamloops.
