MERYL STREEP TO RECEIVE HONOR: Meryl Streep will receive the Toronto International Film Festival‘s Tribute Actor Award during this year’s festival. “Meryl Streep is undoubtedly one of the most talented and versatile actors of her generation,” TIFF co-head Joana Vicente said in a statement. “Her tremendous contribution to cinema, television, and the stage spans five decades; from her early roles in “The Deer Hunter,” “Kramer vs. Kramer,” and “Sophie’s Choice” to later films including “The Devil Wears Prada,” “The Iron Lady,” and “The Post,” she has portrayed characters that are as compelling as they are timeless. TIFF could not be more thrilled to honor such a skilled and exemplary artist.” Streep will receive the honor at the Tribute Gala on September 9th. The 44th annual TIFF runs Sept. 5-15.
TWITTER ADDS 5M DAILY USERS IN Q2: Twitter has been aiming to make its social media platform easier to use, and it appears to be working. Twitter pumped up its daily user base in the second quarter at its fastest rate in almost two years. Twitter’s average daily active user base was 139 million, up 5 million sequentially and up 14% compared with 122 million in the same period a year ago.
GABE KHOUTH DIES: Gabe Khouth, an actor who played Sneezy on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, has died at 46. He reportedly died after having a heart attack on his motorcycle in Canada on July 23rd.
JEFF BRIDGES TO STAR IN THE OLD MAN: Jeff Bridges is set to star in The Old Man, a drama that has been ordered to series at FX. The show is based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Perry, and follows an ex-CIA hero who has been living off the grid. “Jeff Bridges is an iconic, extraordinary actor and to have him as the star of this series is an incredible moment for FX,” said Nick Grad, co-president of original programming for FX Entertainment. “Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine have delivered an amazing pilot script and Jeff is perfect for the role of Dan Chase. We’re also happy to be working with Warren Littlefield, with whom we’ve had such a terrific partnership on Fargo, along with our partners at Fox 21.”
