Kamloops RCMP say international students could fall victim to rental scam

KAMLOOPS — Looking for a rental property can be hard enough.

Now Mounties are warning about scams looking to target university students in particular.

One of the most common scams include using online ads for phantom properties that don’t exist. Another type of scam will advise the victim that they can’t see the property because the property owner is out of town and unavailable to show it.

“Common reasons are that they are out of the country for missionary work or have had a family emergency elsewhere,” Shelkie says.

RCMP says criminals will almost always ask for money up front.
