KAMLOOPS — Police are asking the public to not divulge personal information over the phone after numerous reports of a scam.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release that the detachment has received five complaints about the scam.

Scammers have been calling from an Ontario number, saying they are from Service Canada and that the person’s Social Insurance Number had been compromised.

“They ask for the individual to confirm the last three digits of their SIN,” Shelkie says. “Then the scammers go on to read an ‘affidavit’ stating there are charges against the person.”

She adds there are variations of the phone call. One person was given an officer’s name and badge number when it was requested. Another was told there was an abandoned vehicle located in Regina with their SIN number in it, and that the vehicle had been involved in a serious crime.

“Never give personal information over the phone,” Shelkie says. “If you received a phone call asking for personal information, hang up. Scams can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre on line or by calling 1 (888) 495-8501. If you have been the victim of a fraud, contact the RCMP.”
