Rainy July positive for some farmers, negative for others

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops has received a fair amount of rain this July.

This means it has been a much different kind of growing season for area farmers compared to previous years.

Fruit and vegetable growers are among the many vendors that set up at the Kamloops Farmers’ Market.

Those who grow stone fruits have struggled with the cooler temperatures.

“The rain so much affected the cherries a lot,” said Samrana Abed with Summer Farm. “Also, the apricots are only about 30 per cent this season instead of 120 per cent. We have a really big issue right now. I’m hoping the peaches are good because the weather is still saying rain for the next few days.”

Other growers are enjoying the rain.

Silver Springs Organic Farm has had a much wetter growing season than normal, which is ideal for the type of produce it grows.

“For us it’s been really good,” said Mendel Rubinson, “because we grow all the cold weather stuff, the kale, the chard, different lettuces, we’ve got about 15 varieties of lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, we don’t grow tomatoes because we live in the mountains anyways, but yeah, it’s been good to us. Our stuff likes cold.”
