Steelhead action plan unveiled

VANCOUVER — The federal and B-C governments have released an action plan to protect one of the province’s declining fish populations.

A joint release says steelhead trout have seen a “significant decline” in recent years and runs have reached critically low levels in the Thompson and Chilcotin rivers.

As part of the action plan, the province is closing recreational fisheries in those watersheds and Ottawa is introducing rolling closures for commercial salmon fisheries between September 6th and November 22nd.

The action plan also involves improvements to freshwater conditions through watershed management, and habitat protection and restoration.
