KAMLOOPS — It was a great weekend for Kamloops track and field athletes as the city hosted the B.C. Track and Field Championships.

Athletes trained by Dylan Armstrong won five gold medals in throw events, with three other athletes earning silver.

Kian Zabihi broke a Canadian record in the U-16 hammer event with a throw of 67.87 metres. Armstrong says it’s the third time this month Zabihi has broken his own record. The Maple Ridge native lives in Kamloops now and trains with Armstrong.

Also in the hammer throw, Matthew Arnold won gold in the U-18 event with a throw of 62.80.

In the javelin, two Kamloops athletes took home gold. Cole Bibbi broke the U-16 Canadian record this weekend with a 60.94 metre throw. In the U-18 event, Elliott Payne won with a throw of 57.90 metres.

Quesnel native Bazil Spencer, who lives and trains in Kamloops, won another high jump gold medal. Spencer jumped 1.95 metres to win the event. His brother Linden earned silver in the U-16 javelin.

Jacob Taylor, competing in the U-20 javelin event, fell short of gold, settling for silver with a throw of 55.89 metres. Taylor will be heading to the Canadian junior nationals July 25-28 in Montreal.

The other gold medal winners will compete in the Canadian Youth Track and Field Championships Aug. 9-11 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Para-athlete Greg Stewart threw 15.82 metres in the shot put to break his own Canadian record. He has already qualified for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Toyko next summer.
