KIBT reschedules Thursday night games due to rain

KAMLOOPS — The baseball gods weren’t smiling down on Norbrock Stadium on the opening night of the 46th annual Kamloops International Baseball Tournament.

Rain shut down the game that started at 3:30 between the Everett Merchants and the Edmonton Cubs in the top of the 3rd inning. Grounds crews were out trying to get the diamond to a playable condition, but due to the persistence of the precipitation, there was no way the field would be ready for baseball.

“The diamond is a little bit of a mess, and we’ve tried to fix it up as best we possibly can, but it’s pretty soaked in a lot of areas,” KIBT President Wayne Harper explains. “We’ve delayed this game (Edmonton vs. Everett). We thought we could finish it off at seven o’clock, but the diamond is too messy, so we’re going to have to play them tomorrow.”

The weather forecast continues to look wet for Friday and the weekend. That means tournament organizers will be watching the skies and hoping the forecasters are wrong.

“Only time will tell, really,” Harper tells CFJC Today. “It depends upon on the rain and the baseball gods. Hopefully, they come out and save us.”

Tourney planners have rescheduled the remainder of the Edmonton versus Everett game for 8:30 am. That’s the same time the Kamloops Sun Devils and Calgary Dinos will play their game, which was initially slated to take place Thursday night at 7:00 pm. That means one of the games will will be held over on the Canada Games field.

Harper says he’s hopeful the rain doesn’t keep local baseball fans away from the annual tournament.

“If you’re interested, come on out and watch,” Harper suggests. “It’s a chance we all take as fans and supporters. We take a chance and hope to hell [the weather] gets better.”
