VANCOUVER — According to the latest survey from BC Hydro, many British Columbians are willing to reduce their carbon footprint by driving instead of flying.

Released Friday (June 28), the survey says one third of BC residents are fine with road tripping to their destination instead of hopping on a flight.

Hydro also released data laying out the environmental impact of air versus road travel.

For two passengers on a return flight from Vancouver to Kelowna, that produces around 400 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions. That’s about the same as 170 litres of gas.

Other stats include:

  • Vancouver to Seattle: 260 kg of CO2e
  • Vancouver to Kamloops: 360 kg of CO2e
  • Vancouver to Cranbrook: 440 kg of CO2e

The release also states that driving one of the above routes in an electric car reduces carbon dioxide emissions that come with the drive to nearly zero.

BC Hydro notes that provincially, 98 per cent of the power generated by them is from clean, renewable sources. To view the rest of the survey results, click here.
