KAMLOOPS — Mothers Against Drunk Driving is reminding people to drive sober this holiday long weekend.

Roxanne Engli of MADD Kamloops urges people celebrating with alcohol, or marijuana this weekend to make sure they have a safe ride home.

“We just want people to be safe, and know that it’s not just cars, it’s boats, it’s ATV’s, it’s motorcycles. Anytime you operate some sort of motorized vehicle, just be safe and make the right decisions.”

With marijuana now legalized throughout Canada, Engli points out that consuming cannabis and getting behind the wheel still counts as impaired driving.

“People will say, ‘oh it just makes me relaxed and I’m not impaired’, but you are,” Engli stresses, “Imagine the relaxation factor with marijuana. You’re just not sharp, you’re not on your game.”

Now that MADD has been a prevalent voice in Canadian communities since it’s inception in 1989, Engli says the multi-media shows are brought to over a million students a year.

“It really shows young people how easily this can happen, and be life changing,” She says, “MADD only has two goals. To stop impaired driving, and support the victims. We don’t have to support the victims if we can stop the driving, or certainly reduce it.”

Engli says statistically, there are always more crashes during summer long weekends, alongside more alcohol consumption.

“In Canada, we know that every day 3-4 people are killed by impaired drivers, and about 150 injured.”
