SASKATOON — You can’t get much more Canadian than buying a canoe with a briefcase full of Canadian Tire money.

That’s what Tomas Terfloth did on Thursday in Saskatoon.

The price including tax came to $776.99 — it was on sale.

Most of the money was in 10-cent bills.

Terfloth didn’t do it alone, though.

He received a large donation from friends, family, and others.

“It started as a joke on the internet,” he said. “I never intended to buy a canoe with Canadian Tire money, but I made a joke about doing it, and people really liked it and wanted to help.”

Cashier Linda Smith, who has been at the Canadian Tire store for five years, said she has never seen anything like it.

“I didn’t know what to do,” she said. “I pressed the wrong button on the till and everything.”

Terfloth already knows when he will use the canoe for the first time.

“Tomorrow at Emma Lake,” he said.

What a good kickoff to the Canada Day weekend, eh?
