KAMLOOPS — Kamloops city council is joining the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep temperature rise to 1.5°C.

Councillor Arjun Singh brought the motion forward at Tuesday’s council meeting that a strategic goal be set. He says it’s ambitious, but he feels Kamloops has always stepped up to help better the environment.

Singh says it’ll be a community effort to reduce transportation, increase building efficiencies, and better manage solid waste.

“Right now, what we’ve done is we’ve set a goal that I think is a goal people can actually rally behind, a goal people can really respect in other parts of the world,” he said. “We have to now figure out, through our Climate Action Plan, what actions it would take for us to get. I think it’s the most important thing that city council will do this term.”

Singh says action will start with leadership by example from the city.

“No. 1, we’ve got to really figure out how to use less fossil fuels in our cars. The city has been trying to lead there in terms of getting more electric vehicles in the city fleet,” said Singh. “Our garbage trucks are now moving to compressed natural gas, which has less greenhouse gas-intensive fuels. So hopefully we can, as City Hall, show some leadership. I think we already have.”
