Kamloops RCMP offer safety tips for summer months

KAMLOOPS — Police in Kamloops are reminding the public to be mindful about locking their doors and windows during the summer months.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release that during the summer months, it’s typical to open a window or leave your door unlocked when you go inside for a shower.

“Remember, even if you are in your home or in your own yard, thieves can enter through a window or door that has been left open or unlocked,” Shelkie says.

She adds that summer is also the time for vacations and weekends away. During those times, make sure all windows and doors are locked, have a neighbour collect your mail and newspapers daily, or have someone housesit.

“This person can move the garbage/recycling containers to the roadside on the appropriate days and open and close the curtain/shades so people walking by see that there is someone staying in the residence,” Shelkie says.

Other tips include setting times on lights inside and outside of your home, storing your valuables in a safety deposit box, and never announcing vacation plans on social media.
