KAMLOOPS — Police are investigating after the victim of a residential break-in located some of his stolen items through a popular Facebook group.

According to an unsealed search warrant, the man and his wife were having their home built south of Kamloops. In May, the couple realized someone had broken into their under-construction home, stealing items like valuable tools.

“Stolen was a very expensive generator along with a few thousand dollars’ worth of tools,” the search warrant states.

The day after the discovery, the man noticed his generator for sale on a popular Facebook group.

The seller was offering it for $100, and the man felt he needed to act fast because his generator was actually worth $2,000.

The man met with the suspect and purchased the generator. While he was at the suspect’s home, the man noticed that there were tools everywhere that weren’t stored properly.

While looking around, the man allegedly spotted his old 1920’s socket set and his WWII first aid kit.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says she can’t comment on specific investigations, but it’s always best to leave the investigation to police.

“If you see your item that has been stolen for sale online somewhere, we recommend that you call the police,” she says. “We then can further the investigation safely. There’s the potential if the person who had the items stolen is having contact with the seller and meeting with them in person, it could be dangerous for the victim who had their items stolen.”

Several other pieces of equipment were stolen from the home, and police were granted a search warrant for the seller’s home to try and locate the items. Charges have not been laid against the suspect.
