KAMLOOPS — Former Crown prosecutor Iain Currie is taking a run at federal politics, representing the Green Party for the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo riding in October’s election.

Currie was born and raised in Kamloops. He is a long-time supporter of the Green Party.

He says Canada needs to focus its attention on sustainable industry, weighing in on pipelines and the struggling forestry industry.

“We’ve got the forest fires,” Currie said, “we’ve got this sort of cyclical economy where we’re using our resources and shipping them overseas or down south as opposed to the green plan or the ecologically friendly plan of, sure, using our resources in a renewable, sustainable fashion, investing in small communities where mills are closing so we can transition into a more ecologically friendly economy.”

Currie says he wants to be a voice for saving the planet for future generations.

He hopes to represent the people of Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, but recognizes the wealth of experience he is up against.

“I don’t see either Cathy McLeod or Terry Lake as my opponents,” Currie said. “They’re better politicians than I am. I’ve been doing this for, oh, maybe a week or two? I’m not running to be the best politician or to beat Terry Lake or Cathy McLeod. I’m running to put forward what I firmly believe are the best ideas that are going to move Canada in a positive direction.”
