CHASM, B.C. — Another big hit for the B.C. Interior forest industry.
West Fraser has announced the permanent closure of the Chasm sawmill, effective the third quarter of this year. The decision will throw 176 employees out of work.
In addition, the company is eliminating the third shift at its 100 Mile House mill. This will result in another 34 job losses.
In a news release, West Fraser President and COO Ray Ferris says the move “is the result of well-documented timber supply constraints owing to B.C.’s devastating Mountain Pine Beetle infestation, recent record wildfires, price declines in lumber markets and high saw log costs.”
