Mount Polley hearing this week

VANCOUVER — Engineers and Geoscientists B-C will hold a disciplinary hearing today for engineer Stephen Rice in connection with the 2014 Mount Polley dam collapse, which poured 24-million cubic metres of toxic tailings-pond water and sludge into several B-C lakes and rivers.
The regulatory body for B-C engineers has alleged negligence or unprofessional conduct by three individuals involved in the design, construction, and monitoring of the tailings storage facility.
It accuses Rice — the most senior engineer working at the site at the time — of allowing a junior engineer to act in a role she wasn’t qualified for, and further alleges that Rice himself was also unqualified for his role as review engineer.
