KAMLOOPS — This week, the Thompson Nicola Regional District will be headed to the frontlines to tackle invasive plant species near Kamloops.

In a release, the TNRD says starting Monday, invasive plant management activities will be held along the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Kamloops.

To protect crews while they work, traffic control will implement single-lane closures along the highway.

Crews will be working Monday to Thursday from 5:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m over a two to three week period.

The effort is a partnership between the TNRD and the Ministry of Transportation to manage pesky plants along the route. Given that plant pieces stuck to vehicles are easily transported around B.C, highways have been found to be a major route for invasive plant spreading.

Invasive plants, such as knapweed, do not occur naturally in B.C. These plants can caused environmental and economic harm, and some can even impact human health.
