KAMLOOPS — The general manager of the Kamloops Golf and Country Club spent his entire Thursday on the course.

The annual ALS Golfathon teed off at the Kamloops club with Alec Hubert starting before sunrise at 4:00 a.m. along with his colleage Brett Burgeson.

It’s Hubert’s third time racing against the clock for this PGA of BC initiative for Lou Gehrig’s disease. He hopes to play a personal record 16 rounds.

“I played 14 rounds two years ago and 15 rounds last year, and my goal today is to try to get 16 rounds in,” said Hubert, who took a short break from the marathon to speak with CFJC Today. “It’s a hot one. It’s the hottest day I’ve had doing this, so it’s going to be a challenge.”

According to the ALS Society of BC, there are about 400 patients living with ALS at any one time. Executive director Wendy Toyer says in 2018, the society supported 485 ALS patients, 131 of which passed away from the disease. In the Thompson-Okanagan, the ALS Society of BC supports about 40 patients a year.

Hubert says he doesn’t have a personal connection to ALS. But he feels it’s a good cause to support.

The PGA of BC says $1.7 million has been raised by golf pros across the province since the initiative launched in 2005.
