Barriere RCMP asking public not to bring possible explosives to detachment

Jun 8, 2019 | 8:55 AM

BARRIERE — Police in Barriere are reminding well-intentioned residents that bringing possible explosives to the detachment is not the best way to report them.

Around 10 a.m Thursday (June 6), a man did just that, and dropped off what were believed to be explosive materials at the Barriere detachment.

This resulted in an evacuation, and a six hour closure while the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit dealt with the items.

The man had brought in what were first believed to be a bag of oilfield, work site explosives that he had found in a ditch outside of town.

However, it was found that the items were actually very old flares, which the disposal unit safely disposed of.

While front counter services were disrupted during the closure, police response to emergency calls during that time was unaffected.

In a release, Cpl. Rob Welsman of Barriere RCMP recommends that anyone who finds potentially explosive materials, or other dangerous items, should leave them where they are and call 911 so the items can be undisturbed and examined where they were found.
