Sabiston Creek wildfire now estimated at 200 hectares

SAVONA, B.C. — B.C. Wildfire Service ground crews will be conducting controlled burns near the Sabiston Creek wildfire, which is now estimated at 200 hectares.

Fire Information Officer Marla Catherall says ground crews will be burning out pockets of unburnt fuels between the edge of the fire and the control line, in order to widen control lines and eliminate fuels.

“Crews have been working on the eastern flank, doing some guard,” said Catherall. “They also are conducting a burnout today in order to burn out some small pockets between the fire’s edge and the control line.”

The service says the burn is only happening because conditions are ideal, and allows personnel to create a burn in a controlled environment, rather than having the fuels ignite on their own in an uncontrolled environment.

BC Wildfire says the new size estimate is due to more accurate mapping.

Crews will also be conducting small-scale burns east of Lytton today (June 6) to assess fire behaviour and fuel conditions.
