Driver caught going 240 km/h on the Coquihalla: RCMP

May 27, 2019 | 3:40 PM

MERRITT, B.C. — A driver going twice the speed limit on the Coquihalla claims there was a problem with the accelerator in his car.

RCMP say in a news release that the driver was stopped on May 12 south of Merritt.

An officer was watching speeds when he “visually estimated” the speed of an oncoming vehicle at more than 200 kilometres per hour.

The officer used a laser speed measuring device and clocked the driver at 240 kilometres per hour.

The driver was pulled over and told the officer there was a problem with his car’s accelerator.

His vehicle was impounded for seven days, he got a ticket for excessive speed, and the officer issued an inspection notice.

That notice effectively removes the vehicle from the road and it has to pass a full safety inspection before it can be driven again.

Police say impairment was ruled out as a factor.

“This incident falls during High Risk Driving month in BC and police cannot stress enough the dangers of excessive speeding,” RCMP say in the news release. “Slowing down and obeying speed limits significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death and gives drivers added time to perceive and react to the unexpected.”
