Cariboo Memorial Hospital maternity services to be temporarily suspended this week

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Expectant mothers in the Cariboo region are being asked to arrange different plans for their deliveries should they happen this week.

In a news release, Interior Health says women with deliveries anticipated between May 30 and June 3 are asked to relocate to Kamloops and plan for their deliveries at Royal Inland Hospital.

Low-risk delivery services will resume on June 3 at 7:30 p.m.

IH says a lack of trained maternity nurses is the cause of the suspension.

“IH regrets the impact this interruption to services will have on expectant mothers and families and continues to work to restore full maternity services in Williams Lake as quickly as possible,” the health authority says in a news release.

Maternity services were temporarily suspended at the hospital at the end of February due to an unexpected critical shortage of maternity nurses. Low-risk deliveries resumed April 30.

“Interior Health is confident full maternity services will resume at CMH in July.”

In April, two new maternity nurses were hired at CMH. One new maternity nurse will start in June, and five CMH nurses are being trained in full-scope maternity care and are expected to be ready in July.
