Environment Canada watching for severe thunderstorms in South Thompson

KAMLOOPS — With heavy rain possible in the South Thompson and Interior today (May 25) Environment Canada has now issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the region.

Meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau says there are no severe thunderstorms occurring at the moment, but there is potential with the current conditions, so Environment Canada has issued a watch.

“Basically the situation that we’re going to see today is sort of a wide band of rainshowers with potential for some embedded thunderstorms,” She explains, “Those thunderstorms might give up to 15mm per hour in intensity of rain.”

Given the sensitive areas around the South Thompson, Charbonneau says there is a chance for those storms to have an impact if they form.

“There’s going to be showers around without lightning through the day, but the heavier, more intense rain is expected with embedded thunderstorms. You could see lightning, heavy downpours, and the concern with that would be flash flooding, water pooling on roads, those sort of things.”

Anytime there is a chance for lightning, Charbonneau says Environment Canada reminds people to take precautionary measures and be safe.
