(re: Two & Out — On abortion and women’s health, listen to women — not me)

I JUST WATCHED your editorial on Midday today, on which you commented on the abortion issue. I’m sure you are very prepared to receive dozens of heated emails from people who disagree with the slant you seemed to not want to openly state, but made quite obvious.

It was in your last comment that I felt like you missed the mark. You spoke of the Trans Mountain pipeline, and the various groups that issue impacts, but when you spoke of the abortion issue, you incorrectly stated that there is only one group impacted, and that would be women.

I would strongly disagree with that statement.

I would say the group most impacted by this issue is the unborn baby itself. In the Trans Mountain discussion, you were generous enough to include those people who speak for the environment, acknowledging that the environment cannot speak for itself. Wouldn’t the unborn baby fall into that same type of category? A group that cannot speak for itself?

I am a woman myself who, at the age of 27, found myself unwed, pregnant, and in a family that would be very disapproving of this state. I had no one to blame but myself. Through poor choices, and selfish living I had created this situation. It was certainly not my son’s fault, and to kill him because of my poor judgement would’ve added insult to injury.

I could’ve taken that route. I wanted to say “the easy way out”, but I know the desperation I felt in this situation, and it was anything but easy.

I’m not speaking as a high and mighty idealistic zealot. I have walked a mile in those shoes. My wonderful son is now 30 years old, gainfully employed and happy. Where I thought my life was over, it was only beginning.

I am just really tired of hearing about how things like the Trans Mountain pipeline are affecting our precious whales and other wildlife and trees etc. etc., but our priceless beautiful children are viewed as garbage, and don’t deserve a voice or a chance at life themselves — that they are the scapegoat and a liability at best and the best solution is just kill them.

The fact that you and a disturbing number of others think this is only a women’s issue is barbaric. Seems ironic how in this “enlightened” society, where we can’t say anything that could be construed as offensive, we cavalierly embrace and fiercely defend a mothers “right” to legally kill her baby if it’s going to hamper her lifestyle. That’s offensive to me, and should be to any decent human being that considers themselves humane.
