SALMON ARM — Earlier today, a Salmon Arm campground was struck with tragedy at the start of the May long weekend.

RCMP have confirmed one person is dead and a child has been hospitalized following carbon monoxide poisonings at a campground in the Salmon Arm area.

Cpl. Chris Manseau of RCMP’s E Division says earlier this morning (May 18), Salmon Arm RCMP responded to a private campground just outside of Salmon Arm for reports of possible carbon monoxide poisonings.

“Upon arrival, they found a deceased adult, and a youth suffering from serious injuries,” He explains, “The youth has since been flown to a hospital.”

Cpl. Manseau says early investigation points to carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause, from a camp stove that was found inside the tent.

“At this time, it does not appear to be suspicious, and the investigation has been handed over to the BC Coroners Service.”

Manseau says RCMP are asking people who use camp stoves inside to be sure that the space is well ventilated, and to follow any instructions with these devices to avoid any further tragedies.
