KAMLOOPS — As drivers hit the road for this Victoria Day long weekend, enforcements around the province will be taking place.

Along with this week being National Impaired Driving Prevention week, Kamloops RCMP will be making extra patrols this weekend.

Drivers are being reminded to avoid drinking or using drugs before getting into their vehicles.

ICBC is also putting out the call to motorists to slow down on the roads.

The corporation says that in 2017, 540 people were injured in 2,300 crashes in the province over Victoria Day weekend.

“In a recent survey conducted by Ipsos for ICBC, almost three-quarters… of respondents said they’ve been concerned for their safety as a passenger in a vehicle they considered to be speeding,” ICBC says in a news release. “And as drivers, 46 per cent said their top concern of possible consequences from speeding was injuring a passenger.”

Over the 2017 May long weekend, 69 people were injured in 350 crashes throughout the Southern Interior.
