KAMLOOPS' FIRST CIDERY

Woodward Cider Co. gives Kamloops first taste of locally crafted cider

KAMLOOPS — We already have locally made wine and beer, and now Kamloops has its first craft cidery.

Working out of the Privato Winery and Vineyards location, brothers Tim, Ben and Adam Woodward have followed in their family’s footsteps to create their own cider brand.

Woodward Cider Co’s Adam Woodward says they have rolled out three different kinds of cider for the inital opening.

“So they’re all apple ciders. The first one is our modern dry, which is our Blue Tractor, the second is our 5-Liner, which is a not so dry, and for our flavoured version, we have a raspberry-infused (called Send It).”

The new product is available in select local restaurants and liquor stores, and Woodward says it will bring another option for people who want to drink something other than beer and wine.

“This is our first year, and we just have a limited supply. We’re going to serve Kamloops first, and then slowly expand to the Okanagan and down to Vancouver,” Woodward says. “We’ve planted an orchard now, and it’s going to be three to four years before we harvest off of that orchard, but definitely our plan is to grow in quantity.”

Another benefit of the cider, according to Woodward, is it also provides another choice for people who need gluten-free drinks.

“For us, it was kind of the gluten-free aspect of it. It was my girlfriend (who has celiac disease) who kind of got us involved in it in the first place,” he explains. “We’ve found that all of us are kind of sensitive to the gluten thing, and we’re all drinking lots of cider now because of it. So that’s what’s kind of cool about it.”

The cidery’s grand opening for the public will be held this Saturday (May 18) from 10:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m at 5505 Westsyde Road.
