KAMLOOPS — A wildfire that sparked east of Kamloops over the weekend is now under control.

B.C. Wildfire Information Officer Hannah Swift says the Buse Creek fire remains at 19 hectares, and a hand guard is in place around the entire fire perimeter.

“This one is all good for now. We have the same 18 personnel that we had on site yesterday returning to the fire today and they’ll continue to monitor it and put out remaining hot spots,” Swift says. “There’s no further growth expected.”

Swift says the fire is suspected to be human caused, but with the investigation still underway it’s not yet known exactly what sparked the blaze.

Meantime, the Richter Creek fire roughly 12 kilometres west of Osoyoos is being measured at about 250 hectares.

Swift says this fire is still classified as out of control.

“The Regional District of the Okanagan-Similkameen put an evacuation alert in place yesterday and that remains,” Swift says. “We did experience cooler temperatures over the night so the fire behaviour we’re seeing is not quite as aggressive as yesterday.”

There are still 40 personnel battling the fire and additional resources have been requested.

“We also have two helicopters dedicated to the fire, and they’ll be supporting the ground crew operations. At this time what I can tell you about the cause is that it is human caused, it was a vehicle fire that spread into the grass and at that time we responded.”

Swift adds cooler temperatures should help suppress the fire danger throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre.
