KAMLOOPS — The 4th annual Green Living Expo took place at the Sandman Centre Saturday. The event was put together to help educate the community on incorporating sustainability into their daily lives.

Booths were set up to teach onlookers everything from growing their own veggies to using the latest, most efficient tech.

Kamloops sustainabilty officer Jaimi Garbutt explained why it was important to learn some new tricks when it comes to sustainability.

“We all have a role to play we all make an impact on our environment so it’s important that we make smart choices that are going to have a positive impact on our environment. So, if we can all just pick one thing to do differently, collectively it adds up to a big thing. We can make a huge impact for our community and our planet,” said Garbutt.

One of those things people can do is to fix their own electronics. The Kamloops Makerspace was one of those organizations attending the expo and they demonstrate fixing items brought by members of the community. Nicholas Adams, founder of the Kamloops Makerspace described the benefits of fixing things yourself.

“It’s keeping a lot of stuff out of the landfill. We live in a throw out culture where when something breaks instead of fixing it we’re kind of expected to throw it out and buy another one and its filling our landfills with a lot of materials every year that could still be giving us some good service.”

Adams believes that teaching people confidence to do these things on their own is the key to becoming more environmentally sustainable.
