Victoria Street West project set to move to second phase

KAMLOOPS — The city’s biggest road and infrastructure project is moving into its next phase. Milling will begin for Stage Two of the Victoria Street West Improvements Project on Sunday (May 12). That phase stretches from the upper parking lot of BC Lottery Corporation west to just west of Boomers Automotive near the Overlanders Bridge.

City of Kamloops Capital Project Manager Darren Crundwell says the first phase, from First Avenue to the island separating Seymour Street West and Victoria Street West will continue for another month-and-a-half.

Crundwell says several weeks into the project, there have been no major surprises.

“Things are going well. There have been surprises (but) we haven’t had anything major yet, in terms of having to do a redesign because something has changed,” said Crundwell. “So I’d say in general, things are going according to plan.”

Motorists will need to continue to exercise patience through the construction zone, and Crundwell says there have been occasions when patience is in short supply.

“We have had the incidents of road rage — which is unfortunate,” said Crundwell. “But in general, the majority of the public is respecting the construction site.”

The City continues to encourage the public to patronize businesses along the Victoria Street West corridor.

“We’re hopeful that, if everything is on schedule, by late-October or early-November, we’re going to have the road back open to four lanes,” said Crundwell. “We will only have one lift of asphalt and we’ll have to come back next year to finish off the paving and surface work and landscaping work. But that’s the plan: to hopefully get out of there as quickly as we can.”
