Kamloops hospice seeks to bust myths during Palliative Care Week

KAMLOOPS — It is National Palliative Care Week across Canada, a week that is focused on improving the quality of life for patients near the end of their lives.

Wendy Marlow, the executive director of the Kamloops Hospice Association, believes palliative care week was necessary to shine light on another form of care.

“I think it’s been an unrecognized area of care. A lot of times we don’t want to talk about dying or we don’t want to talk about what is important to us with our families until we die so It brings some recognition to say there’s a group of nurses and care aids and volunteers who work tirelessly with people to help them through this part of their journey,” said Marlow.

The event was created in hopes of busting myths about palliative care, and Marlow believes the biggest myth is simply not knowing this service exists.

“So some of the myths around palliative care and hospice care are really awareness. So, people aren’t aware that there is services and support available to them,” noted Marlow. “We want people to know that we are there we are a phone call away we have a new resource centre and we will continue to meet the needs of our community.”
