Increase in car windows being smashed in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — There’s been an increase in the number of car windows being smashed in the city.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says although the numbers of thefts from vehicles have stayed relatively static over the past few years, more people are reporting damaged windows.

“We’ve found, though, that a lot of people are getting the message about locking their vehicles and that’s great, however there does seem to be a trend in that more vehicle windows are being broken,” Shelkie says.

She adds that’s due in part to people leaving valuables in their locked vehicles.

“The thieves walk by, they see something of value inside and they’re breaking the window to get in to get it,” she says. “So it’s not just a matter of locking your vehicle, you need to take all of your valuables out of your vehicles as well.”
