CMHA, Olympian Catharine Pendrel kick off Ride Don’t Hide campaign

KAMLOOPS — Today (May 6) marks the start of Mental Health Week and it’s also the kick off to the campaign for the seventh annual Ride Don’t Hide event.

The Canadian Mental Health Association is encouraging people to focus on their mental health this week by managing stress and leaning on others.

Ride Don’t Hide, which takes place in June, raises money for the CMHA and is an opportunity for people to speak openly about their mental health and feel supported by the other participants.

“Last year and this year the ride is happening across Canada,” said CMHA Kamloops Executive Director Christa Mullaly. “So CMHA has taken on this event nationally and there’s people riding on June 23 all the way across Canada to really promote mental health and simply to say, ‘you know what? I’m not afraid of the stigma associated with mental illness and I’m proud to be who I am and I’m not afraid.'”

Three-time Olympian Catharine Pendrel has joined the CMHA to endorse the event.

As an athlete, Pendrel says it has been extremely important to take care of her own mental health.

“For myself, racing, you can go through a lot of nerves, you can have so many intense highs and lows, and profound excitement, and disappointments,” Pendrel said, “and so it’s really staying grounded, supporting myself with good people that I can share how I’m feeling with and also just building tools that I know what is stress talking, what makes me feel anxious, and how I can have those tools in place so I can recognize, ‘hey, that’s just stress talking, maintain your confidence, this is what you’ve done, and maintaining a strong sense of purpose,’ and I find those things really help a lot.”
