Driver arrested after striking flagger in construction zone

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP have now arrested a driver after he allegedly struck a flagger with his vehicle this morning (May 2).

In a release, Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says just before 10:00 a.m. along Valleyview Drive at Vicars Road, a flagger had signaled for a car to stop and wait for oncoming traffic.

The driver indicated that he saw the flagger, but continued on anyway, and his vehicle struck the flagger as she was standing on the roadway.

The man did not stop at the construction site after the impact, but later showed up at the RCMP detachment, where he was then arrested.

The 46-year old driver from Kamloops was not previously known to police, and charges will be determined by the BC Prosecution Service.

The flagger was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Domcor traffic control supervisor, Cairo Kozjak says it was distressing to have one of their members involved in a vehicle incident this morning.

“I’d just like to remind everyone that we all have a family to get home to at the end of the day, and if you could just slow down and drive with care, it would make everybody’s lives a lot safer and easier.”

Cpl. Shelkie agrees, and notes extra care is needed with all the construction going on within Kamloops lately.

“Most are controlled by flaggers, and it’s really important to show patience, and to really listen to what the flaggers are telling you to do,” She stresses, “They’re not there to slow down traffic and make drivers late, or anything like that. They’re there to direct traffic in an orderly manner so that everybody is safe, including themselves.”
