KAMLOOPS — The Western Hockey League bantam draft is underway.

Blazers had the seventh overall pick and took defenceman Mats Lindgren from North Vancouver.

The Winnipeg Ice had the first overall pick, and selected Matthew Savoie.

It’s a gamble by the ice. But after being denied exceptional status by Hockey Canada to play as a 15 year old next season, Savoie has followed his older brother Carter in committing to NCAA University of Denver.

The Ice recently acquired Carter’s rights from Regina.
