VANCOUVER — A guilty plea and a fine for the man behind the wheel in a deadly crash on the Coquihalla.

In April, 2017, Melissa Mimura, a 21-year-old UBC-Okanagan international student from Japan was on the phone with a 911 operator after her car spun out on the snowy highway, when she was hit by a truck.

Mimura died at the scene.

The driver of that truck, George Holowko, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, and today was given a $1,500 dollar fine.

Holowko says he feels terrible about the crash. Mimura’s family and friends are calling that fine a ridiculously light penalty.
