KAMLOOPS — A Cariboo woman has announced her intention to seek the federal NDP nomination for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo.

Gina Myhill-Jones says in a news release that she believes it’s time for a change.

“Canadians need to be served by a Government that puts Canadians and Canadian interests first,” Myhill-Jones says. “I would welcome the opportunity to represent the riding of Kamloops Thompson Cariboo as a member of the only Party I believe to be dedicated to serving, with integrity, the interests of all Canadians.

“No old rhetoric, no empty election year promises and no scandals to pollute Canada’s position on the world stage. But a new team with a principled and genuinely caring leader.”

Myhill-Jones says she’s ready to roll up her sleeves and work for the people of the riding as their representative.

She’s lived in the riding, on a ranch just outside of 100 Mile House, for 10 years after moving there from a working farm in Maple Ridge.

Myhill-Jones says she’s served on various boards, helped with the Therapeutic Riding Associations, worked with community theatre groups, volunteered to teach art and help with literacy at a recovery facility, and helped with community festival planning.

“I have worked as a Women’s Centre Safe House Coordinator (supporting the victims of domestic violence and their families) and a Community Support Worker (supporting individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities) practicing advocacy and inclusion in both capacities,” she says.

She adds that she created the Facebook group called Cariboo Neighbours 911, which grew to more than 5,500 members during the 2017 wildfires.

So far, former MLA and Kamloops mayor Terry Lake has announced he’s seeking the Liberal nomination for the riding, and current MP Cathy McLeod will run again for the Conservative party.
