KAMLOOPS — Police say a 51-year-old fraud suspect has been arrested after climbing into an RCMP vehicle in Kamloops.

In a news release, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday (April 10), officers received a call from a bank on Notre Dame Drive that a man was impersonating one of its clients, and allegedly attempting to transfer a large amount of money from the client’s account.

The bank employee gave a detailed description of the man, and as police arrived on scene the suspect ran out of the bank and across the road.

Officers followed on foot and in their vehicles. Shelkie says because the officers were in uniform and driving marked cars, the suspect was able to hide behind buildings and hedges to avoid them.

An off-duty Police Dog Service (PDS) officer was in the area, driving his vehicle with his dog for regular exercise and training.

Shelkie says the officer was monitoring his radio and heard the other officers attempting to locate the suspect. The PDS officer drove his unmarked vehicle into the area, and when he saw the suspect, motioned him over to his vehicle.

As the suspect climbed inside, the officer identified himself and placed the Calgary man under arrest.

The suspect tried to take off but changed his mind after the officer told him he would release his police dog. Uniformed officers arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody.
