KAMLOOPS — One of the most exclusive groups in the City of Kamloops has two new members.

Longtime Kamloops councillor Pat Wallace and CFJC’s own Doug Collins were honoured with the Freedom of the City at a formal ceremony Wednesday night.

The highest civic honour one can receive, only 27 members have been awarded the Freedom of the City in the history of Kamloops.

It requires a unanimous vote of council, and Wallace says she was touched that the group she spent 31 years as a part of voted to recognize her.

“It’s truly an honour,” said Wallace. “I didn’t expect it, and I’m absolutely thrilled that they were kind enough… to vote to give me that honour.”

Besides his legendary broadcasting career, Collins was honoured for his dedication to youth sports and to the Kamloops arts community.

“Really, it’s a very humbling experience,” said Collins. “You see all these people who were part of the ceremony here tonight, and all of the things that they have done… it’s just really humbling to be considered a part of that group.”

In addition to the Freedom of the City, Mayor Ken Christian also awarded seven local residents with Exemplary Service Awards for their spirit of volunteerism.

“Freedom of the City hasn’t been given out in Kamloops since 2013 to Ambo Dhaliwal. So it’s been a long time, and we had two very deserving recipients tonight,” said Christian. “But then when you get to the Exemplary Service Awards, the diversity of the applicants and their resumes… it’s just amazing. You know people because maybe you’ve met them, but you don’t fully understand all of the facets of their volunteerism within the city.”

Recipients of Exemplary Service Awards include Tyson Andrykew, Penny Douglas, Lisa Fuller, Cheryl Kabloona, Lisa Lake, Kirstin McLaughlin and Andrew Yarmie.
