KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Council has put its stamp of approval on a grant application for improvements to the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.

City staff have applied for funding of more than $450,000 through the CleanBC Communities Fund.

That money would be invested into the proposed $9 million infrastructure improvement project at the Aquatic Centre.

Sustainability Service Supervisor Glen Cheetham says work will be done on the facility’s envelope, mechanical, electrical and ventilation systems.

“The Games pool was built in 1992 and it’s been well maintained,” Cheetham said, “but after 27 years of hosting countless swim meets and people having fun swimming in the pool, those systems are ending their design life. So there’s an opportunity to pursue some best practice energy efficiency measures as part of this overall project, so we’re hoping that this grant will give us an opportunity to do that.”

At Tuesday’s regular council meeting, councillors voted unanimously in favour of providing a resolution in support of the application.

The project is planned to begin next year.
