SUN PEAKS, B.C. — For the first time in recent history, Sun Peaks’s real estate market was the second-most active in the Kamloops region last month.

According to numbers released on Monday by the Kamloops and District Real Estate Association, there were 18 sales in the mountain resort municipality last month.

Sun Peaks Mayor Al Raine says the housing market in the community has grown steadily over the past couple of years.

“Well, there’s definitely been a very active real estate market in the last two years, and it’s still staying very, very strong,” Raine says. “We see people coming from out of country, from out of province, from the Lower Mainland, even Whistler, so there is a very strong interest in Sun Peaks real estate and there has been product coming on the market over the last two years, so it’s certainly kept the real estate people in Sun Peaks very busy.”

Raine says Sun Peaks is moving away from being considered just a winter resort town, and heading into the territory of year-round resort.

“There’s still lots to do in the summer,” Raine says. “One of the advantages of Sun Peaks is a very strong winter market, but we’re also more and more a summer resort, too. So I think that is attracting people.”

Earlier this year, CFJC Today reported on the booming building sector and population in the resort town. Construction on projects like Peaks West and more residential buildings has increased the demand for real estate in the area.

The value of building permits issued in the municipality reached nearly $32 million during 2018.
