FIRST DEAD TO ME TRAILER DROPS: Dead To Me, a dark comedy from writer Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls), Will Ferrell and Adam McKay‘s Gloria Sanchez Prods. and CBS TV Studios, shared its first trailer and first-look photos of the show. The Netflix series is set to drop Friday, May 3rd, and will star Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini. It follows the story of Jen (Applegate), a widow determined to solve her husband’s murder, and Judy (Cardellini) a free spirit who’s also recently suffered a tragic loss.
DISCOVERY TO LAUNCH GLOBAL SERVICE WITH BBC NATURAL HISTORY: Discovery Inc. and BBC Studios have unveiled a series of long-term partnerships and licensing deals covering BBC natural history and factual programming. Financial terms were not disclosed, but under the deal, Discovery will become the exclusive home of the BBC’s blockbuster natural history programs, includingthe Planet Earth, Blue Planet and Life franchises for a new global subscription VOD service that Discovery has said will launch next year.
ANTI-ABORTION FILM GETS STRONGER THAN EXPECTED OPENING: After seeing its TV ads shut down by mainstream cable networks and its Twitteraccount frozen, PureFlix‘s anti-abortion feature Unplanned still managed a $6.1 million opener, the second-best ever for the faith-based self-distributed roster of film. The film garnered an R, making it an even more stupendous achievement, observers say, pointing to Mel Gibson’s 2004 The Passion of the Christ as the last R-rated faith based film. Unplanned follows the real-life story of Abby Johnson, a Planned Parenthood director who resigned after being asked to assist in an abortion at 13 weeks gestation.
REDBOX ANNOUNCES DOOR-TO-DRONE SERVICE: In the April Fools spirit of things, Redbox announced a spoof service that would utilize drones to fly kiosks to customers’ doorsteps. The fake-out is also a promo for the company’s transactional streaming offering, Redbox on Demand, which allows consumers to pay as they go for movies and shows they stream.
