Electric vehicle rebate combination could bring sizable savings to BC buyers

KAMLOOPS — People looking into purchasing an electric vehicle now have several thousand dollars worth of incentives they can use.

Rivercity Nissan Sales Consultant, Jonny Walker, says the newly announced federal government rebate is able to be combined with the existing $5,000 rebate offered by the BC Government — taking off a sizable chunk of a new vehicle’s price.

With the federal rebate, customers can get a $5,000 break when they buy a new electric or hydrogen-powered car priced under $45,000.

“You’ve also got the BC Scrap It program. So if you have a vehicle that you can scrap, you can get up to $6,000 back after tax from that as well,” Walker explains. “So there’s up to $16,000 back on vehicles, and they’re all combinable.”

Walker says each month in Kamloops their lot sees two to three electric cars sold, and the potential money saved has brought in more than the usual eco-minded fanfare to try out the vehicles.

“This one, we’re getting a lot more families that live out in Pinantan, Pritchard, driving back and forth to sports all day long,” he says. “So they’re spending $1,000 a month on gas and now they’re buying this because it’s costing them no gas whatsoever. Its definitely more families now and retired people, rather than just ‘I must have a green car’.”
