Michael Buble Gets Personal

Mar 20, 2019 | 6:00 AM

As he prepares for a new TV special that will air tonight, Michael Bubl related a story that would give any artist a serious ego check. The singer said he was flying home from Argentina recently when a flight attendant told him she was a fan. But she was having a debate with her fellow flight attendants.

“And I said, ‘What’s the question?’ And she said, ‘Did you win American Idol or The Voice? Or did you just place?’

“I had an epiphany in that moment,” Bubl said. “And I went and sat in my seat and I thought … so many people in America, they don’t know. They might know my name, and they might hear the music or have seen the Bubly commercial, but they really don’t know.”

We should know more when his special bubl! airs tonight on NBC. Backed by a 36-piece orchestra, Bubl will sing romantic staples such as “Fly Me to the Moon,” harmonize with jazz artist Cecile McLorin Salvant on “La Vie en Rose,” and perform original songs such as his chart-topping “Haven’t Met You Yet” and tracks off his latest album, Love.

The special, which was filmed in an intimate concert setting, will also feature never-before-seen photos and footage from his adolescence in Canada and early career.

“I thought, well, this is a great opportunity for me to tell a story,” Bubl said. “A story of my life that tells, biographically, the history of how I did this and where I came from.”

With the “documentary-slash-performance,” Bubl says he’s ready to tell his story: “You get to really look into the loves of my life – my family, music and [the audience].” “Hopefully my music can get them through the things that are tough in their lives. I feel connected to those beautiful souls,” Bubl says. “I think they’ll realize that I’m speaking to them when I’m looking through the camera and looking at them.”

Bubl will be releasing an audio-only digital version of bubl! The original soundtrack of the NBC special will be available at all digital and streaming services on Thursday, March 21st.

Bubl is currently receiving critical raves and nightly standing ovations during his North American tour in support of his current chart-topping album “love” . More dates have been added to the tour due to the overwhelming demand for tickets.
