UPDATE: RCMP investigating abandoned house fire on North Shore

KAMLOOPS — Police say squatters gaining entrance into an abandoned North Shore home may be to blame for a fire.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says early this morning an on-duty officer spotted smoke and flames coming from a home in the 100 block of Wilson Street.

The officer called Kamloops Fire Rescue to attend.

Shelkie says the home was vacant and had been boarded up after a fire in 2018 damaged most of the interior. The cause of the fire is not known at this point but Shelkie says it’s possible squatters had gained entrance.

There’s no indication anyone was inside the home during the fire.

When fire crews arrived, the fire was already fully involved, with flames through the roof, and crews took a defensive approach to fighting the blaze to ensure the safety of the crews.
