KAMLOOPS — This evening, School District 73 is hosting a parent engagement session at the Henry Grube Centre on the topics of cannabis and vaping among youths.

Dr. Marvin Krank, Professor of Psychology at UBC Okanagan, is the guest speaker. He says youth are being targeted by these vaping companies who are misrepresenting the activity as a safe alternative to smoking, which Krank claims is simply not true.

“We’ve reduced smoking rates so dramatically over time, and now that trend has reversed,” Krank explained. “One of the ways we did it with nicotine reduced the places and inducements to use tobacco. We need to do something like that with these vapes because they are essentially a drug-delivery system.”

Krank’s talk will also touch on the effects of the new laws surrounding legal cannabis and the availability and attitudes surrounding the drug.

“Legalization [of cannabis] has, so far as we’ve been able to determine, has not really created any additional concerns,” Krank said. “We should be concerned, we should be vigilant about what cannabis our kids are smoking or eating. But there’s nothing radically different — we haven’t noticed an increase in use or even changes in positive attitude about it. Those things have not happened so far.”

The session begins at 7:00 p.m.
